061 I Wanna Be Your Sledgehammer

A few weeks ago someone left a comment and incorrectly grouped Peter Gabriel in with Phil Collins and Huey Lewis. I'm here to say that even though "Sledgehammer" and "Steam" aren't exactly gems, songs like "Solsbury Hill," "Games Without Frontiers," "Biko," and even "Shock the Monkey" are bonafide classics! Do you remember the "Shock the Monkey" video? I'll never forget that shot of Peter dancing in unison with that larger than life desklamp thingy. And... look what i just found: Watch the video right here! And since i couldn't find a pic from that video, here one from the old familiar... You could have a bumper car...

There is a reason why I'm all sledgehammered out. I've been ruthlessly destroying a wooden backyard deck for the past few hours. I'm tired. It's hot. My hands are all blistery and sore... so i'm staying in for the remainder of the day. Much to do... and for you, too! For instance...

GO DOWNLOAD THE NEWLY POSTED CITY ON FILM MP3! Only 2 weeks until In Formal Introduction ships out!!!

Great track Bob, just makes me want the record even more now. Ooooh, it might even arrive for my birthday if it ships in two weeks. Excellent!
Not much of a Peter Gabriel fan, my mum is though.

Okay, that was me that lumped them together. I did so because they, like Dire Straits, sing in a voice that just seems like the kind of thing that would be playing while you were being molested. Phil Collins has long been my archnemesis. His voice is the auditory equivalent of peeled yellow formica table-tops in a mobile home or a boat show in Omaha, Nebraska circa 1983. Not to say untalented, just...evil. Dire Straits’ Sultan of Swing is the next worst offender. It gives me the willies. So does Money for Nothing, but to a lesser degree. Peter Gabriel is tainted by his association with Genesis. However, he is un-tainted by his association with Lloyd Dobler. I always though of him as an underling archnemises to Phil Collins but now I feel like an asshole because a cursory glance at his ‘bio’ reveals that he has done extensive human rights work with the same organization I work for, Amnesty International. So, while I will never buy any Peter Gabriel albums and I definitely do NOT like Sledgehammer, he is off the hook as far as the triumvate of evil is concerned. Huey Lewis, the third most evil artist, has two songs that I like: The Power of Love and Cruisin’ Together with Gwenyth Paltrow (did you know that got to number 1 in Australia?). Again, it’s not the quality of the work I take issue with, it’s the creepy voice.

Didn’t mean to cause controversy. I wonder if there is a word for an irrational fear of 70s and 80s pop artists? I also strongly dislike claymation/furmation (a la x-mas specials), eyebrows, and people that liked Episode 1. So, there you go.

Also, does anybody like Bloc Party? I am in love.

Stella, if you listen to Genesis with Peter Gabriel, and more importantly, Steve Hackett, you will see that they sounded VASTLY differently than the 80s-Phil Collins led troupe. They may still not be your cup of tea, but nowhere near the same music.

oddly enough the guitars in "forgiveness" feel Owen-esque to me. oh wait.. i just heard some palm muting. nevermind. i like the galloping drums. and the electronics give it a very "home" feel to it as well. if it makes sense.

I'm here to defend early Genesis - with Peter Gabriel on vocals AND Phil Collins on drums (he was the drummer before he became the singer) - as some of the best early to mid seventy's prog rock - ever......who else was writing songs in 7/8 in 1973?...besides Yes, Soft Machine and King Crimson that is.....long live prog!!!!

too many people think that the synth based 80's junk is all Genesis was about....no way mister.....70's Genesis is good stuff....maybe sometimes a bit too "magical" sounding.....but good.....
