057 A Crazy Haired Guitar Spanker

That title comes from this article detailing Jack White's recent marriage to Karen Elson. They were married at the confluence of 3 rivers in Brazil: the Rio Negro, the Salimones, and the Amazon. In attendance were one million mosquitoes. I'll say it again... A crazy haired guitar spanker.

Another funny article I came across was this battle for Neil Armstrong's hair. It's no big deal, right? Someone yoinked some clippings from an Ohio barber and sold them to a collector for $3,000. The guy has the largest collection of hair in the world so I bet it's a common thing... but slightly not so common is this vial of air supposedly exhaled by the supposed moonman. As of right now it's been bid up to... $5. Hmm. A vial of air. A crazy haired guitar spanker.

Hey that reminds me of another thing Screamin' J told me on one tour or another. Think about this. The moon landing had to be a scam, i mean, it was only 1969. The Pong video game wasn't even developed until 1972!

And if hair and air weren't creepy enough, imagine what disgusting and highly profitable stuff you may find in a bathroom garbage can!

It all adds up to mp3 weekend. Firstly, a request! "My Funny Valentine" from Rufus Wainwright, also on the Sweetheart series mentioned last week. And then a really great cover of "What a Fool Believes" by Self played entirely on toy instruments. Don't worry, you won't even notice. And lastly, Wednesday got me thinking about Seaweed, so i posted "Squint," the instant classic from Weak. Enjoy!

Bob, I noticed when you started talking about Seaweed a while back that you were fond of Four and Weak, but I'm curious as to your thoughts on Spanaway for their one album with Hollywood Records.

I've always thought it to be their weakest effort but have always been fond of "Start With." Just curious. Happy weekend to you.

Yeah, i never really liked it. But you're right, "Start With" was ok. I think "Actions & Indications" has some great songs, too.

I think 'Four' was their best overall effort. But yes, "Start With" is a fine tune. I would love to cover something off of 'Four' with my current band. It's so sad a lot of kids don't really know about them these days.

That Self cover is fantastic! Thanks so much for posting it!

I remember seeing Seaweed play on that tour in 199...3? with Green Day and Bad Religion and I went to every bay area show they did and got autographs and was the only person that knew all their songs. They played my requests and everything. They even opened two sets with "Measure" since it was my favorite song.
Self is amazing also.... If you don't have Breakfast with Girls, it's really their best record. It is one of very few records I have never ever gotten tired of.
And Rufus Wainwright is the only celebrity that has ever hit on me.

I can't believe people are actually bidding on that vial of air.
Just wondering where you picked up this Sweetheart series, the stuff you posted from it's pretty damn good.

You'd never guess it, and neither would I, but I found them at Starbucks. I saw it around last Valentine's Day and picked it up expecting it to be total garbage and then I saw Iron & Wine! Ron Sexsmith! Nada Surf!

I think you may be able to purchase them online here.

Bob, thank you thank you thank you for posting that "What a Fool Believes" by Self. I have been looking for that for quite some time...

The folks here at 50,000feet, Inc. are appreciative. Made our day.

Holla back,

Starbucks! That's an unusual place to find decent music, but then I guess they're trying to make people take the coffee house home.
I really want to hear Calexico's Joy Division cover so I might have to order that one.
Cheers

Quite tempted by #6 as well, mainly for the Spain track. I got 'The blue moods of Spain' for my birthday last year, took a little while to see the beauty of it, but it's a great album. Then it's got Whiskeytown, Ron Sexsmith and I've heard a lot about the Old '97s.

Sorry for yet another post, but after all the effort of looking through them picking out what I thought would be the best, it turns out they only ship to the US & Canada. Ah well, saves me £20.

i'm bothered by iron and wine / sexsmith / nada surf / (any other bands whom i love and admire) being sold at starbucks. the herpes sore of society, in my opinion. and this will probably sound musically snobbish but it takes away from the meaning of the music to me when the guys that tried to beat my ass in high school are at a death cab show these days. look at what the OC has done to some bands too. apologies for the negativity but that really bothers me when i see bands i would die for being sold by a bunch of fascists.

Guys! What about 'crush us all'?? The jam on Spanaway in my opinion. I love me some Seaweed. One of my favorite bands still to this day.. and I always wondered why they put Squint last on the album Weak. Weird placement. Great song. I saw them on the 'Four' tour and kept yelling for squint to be played, Aaron just kept looking at me and squinting. Really fucking hilarious. They eventually played it, and Braid had the honor of touring with them years later.

Any vinyl nerds needing a copy of Spanaway, the hard to find Hollywood release on wax, email me; I have two. I love to trade!

"Squint" used to be on just about every mix tape I made. Brilliant song.
