030 Everyday, Everyday, Everyday I Write The Blog

The lineup for Austin City Limits was announced today and I have to say I'm not terribly impressed... with a few exceptions. Out of the 120 or so bands listed, I would be absolutely thrilled and excited to see: Keane, Doves, The Decemberists, and Aqualung. Then there are the bands that I'd love to see but either have-seen-before or have-a-chance-to-see-soon. Then there are the bands that i've seen a million times but never in this setting so that would be swell. And finally, there are the bands that I will avoid at all costs. Sadly, there are more than a few. Last year was an absolute blast. Literally. I felt as if the festival was hosted on the sun. And there were many moments to look forward to. Namely: Pixies, Wilco, Broken Social Scene, Elvis Costello, Neko Case, Old 97's, Cat Power, Modest Mouse, The Killers... So does the actual experience outweigh the music itself? Or should the experience solely be the music? Should I stay or should I go? Rock the Casbah? Should I maybe switch gears and talk about Favicons?

Favicons are the bane of my existence at the moment. Mostly because the browsers are so unpredictable with them... A favicon is that little bitty icon that shows up in the address line next to your URL... They just showed up out of nowhere! And so, not to be left behind in the race for hot new web technology, I fashioned one for the wire. Can you see it? I have one ready for this here daily.... all in good time. In fact, do you see a little icon up there already? That's insanity because i didn't even enter the html code to make that happen on this page. Ugh, let's talk about lunch.

Yes, I Lunchblogged it up yesterday, so go read about that! And then you should check out Quinn's new band, Sleep Out. I would suggest downloading the live version of "Cat or a Horse" to begin with. Really beautiful stuff. If all goes well, TCOF will be playing with Sleep Out in Geneva, IL on June 24. Holla.

Even more TCOF dates were confirmed so check em out at the space and today i begin working on the actual TCOF site. I may be back to complain.

Aren't you so excited for mp3 weekend to start?

Hey Bob,

No code necessary for the favicon. Since the image itself sits in the main/index directory for "heymercedes.com", it automatically gets applied to your homely blog here(since it lives within hm.com).

#1 you always forget about sheryl crow being the #1 highlight of last year's ACL, oh yeah, because you missed her!

#2. you're still going this year. I've already decided who I'm excited for, you ready? good. coldplay, oasis, wilco (again), arcade fire, death cab, built to spill, tortoise, keane, the walkmen, rilo kiley, spoon, the decemberists, rachael yamagata, the new amsterdams, slightly stoopid (JK!!!), south austin jug band, and that's it.

#3. my dad's secretary is quitting, want a job until I get out of school for the summer?

And what's this about a homely blog? It's a work in progress, chumpo. Just for that, I will not even offer to cover "I'm a Cuckoo" for your wedding. Ooh, speaking of which, have you seen the cover of that single? Adorable.

Will you be playing ACL this year? If you do, I hope you tear it up...get it? ACL??? (it's in your knee).

sorry.

p.s. - go see Leo Kottke. He'll make you want to quit music forever -that's how good he is.

Funny thing. The City On Film was submitted about a month too late for this year's ACL. Maybe next year...

I think you should do a post about how to get one of these favicons on your own site.

In case you wanted an Elvis Costello/Kevin Rowland connection:
The Costello song reference in the titled of today's entry "Everyday I Write the Book" appears on the album "Punch the Clock." Prominently featured on this album is a collection of horn players affectionately known as the TKO Horns. Most if not all of the TKO Horns were members of the "Searching for the Young Soul Rebels" era Dexys Midnight Runners. After constant power struggles with Rowland forced many members of the band to leave, Rowland went on to form a new incarnation of Dexys which included a Celtic vibe. Soon the band was internationaly famous, traveling the world on the back of "Come On Eileen." Meanwhile the original Dexys Members formed a new group called "The Bureau." They recorded an incredible album called "Only For Sheep" which, for some reason, was only released in Australia and Canada. Due to the lack of success, The Bureau disbanded. A large portion of its members remained together as a horn section for hire recording tracks with the afore mentioned Elvis Costello as well as Madness, Nick Lowe, Difford & Tilbrook, Portion Control, Howard Jones, The Fixx and possibly The Escape Club on its hit single "Wild Wild West."

Searching for the Young Soul Rebels is readily available.

A Recent reissue of The Bureau's Only For Sheep is available as an import.

Wow, that's an amazing connection... and to bring it full circle, how odd that "Wild Wild West" is a complete rip off of Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up." Don't you agree?

From Elviscostello.info
"Pump It Up
has similarities to Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', which is itself a re-write of Chuck Berry's 'Too Much Monkey Business'. A version of 'Pump It Up' performed with the Confederates, 1987-12-04 at Shellharbour Worker's Club, Wollongong, Australia included a verse from each of the above derivatives (gcater@shaol.net.au). Escape Club borrowed riff from 1988 hit 'Wild Wild West'. EC has turned this song into 'Slow Down', by Larry Williams, recorded by the Beatles, in concert."

And now I feel a lot like the drummer of INXS who has the hardest time trying to keep the pace of discarding signs during the "Mediate" video, which of course was a tribute to the "Subterranean Homesick Blues" video. I believe he actually gets lapped by the saxophone player before his verse ends. Poor guy. That's how I feel.

But I am just so intrigued by it all... Thanks for all of the info. Coincidentally, Elvis did play "Pump It Up" at last year's ACL fest. Funtime.

you TOTALLY got that game show song-wheel idea from elvis costello's blood and chocolate tour... and if not, it's a hell of a coincidence!

I swear I had no idea about the Elvis wheel. I still don't... As for that Braid show, the wheel came first. I saw it at this charity event that my mom hosted and immediately i thought, "i have to use that thing... somehow."

There's some good stuff going on at that Austin City Limits. I wish I was in the US, I really wanted to go to the Hush records thing the last night, but there was some distance to travel. At ACL go see, Bob Mould, The Doves, Rilo Kiley, Spoon, The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Willy Mason, Nine Black Alps, Aqualung, Ambulance Ltd, The New Amsterdams, M83 and DCFC.
I can't see that Favicon thing :( Still no date confirmed for London?

Favicon looking very solid.

Wow, i totally meant homely to be taken as the "comfortable" meaning of the word. Talk about a word with multiple interpretations.
*sigh*

Now you done it. I'm on my knees here begging for an "I'm A Cuckoo" cover...pppplz!!

Yes Bob, you'll be glad to know she is maintaining her weight, the diet has never really worked out for my big boned gal.

Listening to The City On Film CD reference master. Just got to the part of the dropping tamborine in Hellacopter. Still hilarious.
