Robert:

It's official. I'm exhausted. I will have to nab one of those tasty "180" power-beverages in the upstairs fridge if i am expected to go to any par-tay tonight. But anyway, here's the tentative (looking more concrete everyday) tracklist for EVERYNIGHT FIRE WORKS : 1. The Frowning of a Lifetime - 2. Every Turn - 3. A-List Actress - 4. The Slightest Idea - 5. Haven't Been This Happy - 6. Que Shiraz - 7. Our Weekend Starts on Wednesday - 8. Eleven to Your Seven - 9. Quit - 10. What You're Up Against - 11. Let's Go Blue... The 6 other songs we recorded will be available elsewhere somewhere in time. Bye.

Todd:

Here we are at the studio, have'nt had a whole lot of time to do neccesary things today like BLOG for instance, but alas, here I am. Better late than never.

Heres a Saturday recap: We spent the beginning of our day here @ the studio listening to and finalizing "Have'nt Been This Happy". Then I ate a bagel. Then I made a third pot of coffee for me and the boys. Then did some indoor studio-type photos with our pal Chris Strong. Then we loaded up the van full of camera equipment and ventured out around Madison to take some band photos with our pals Gregg and Chris in tow. I think we got some keepers too, so expect to see a new photo up on the site sometime soon, possibly this week. We ate dinner while out and about at Monty's blue plate(again), I had the Tempeh Lettuce and Tomato(TLT) so did Bob and Damon. I think Farm had the eggplant-wich. We saw Scott from Paris TX there and he reminded us of this party that is happening tonight at his friend Joe's house.

Should I go?

I'm not feeling totally well, kinda weird actually, hopefully i'm not getting the 24hr sickness Damon had two days back. Hmmm. Let's see here. Hold on...

YES! I just found a 'lost' Newcastle from last night! In the fridge here next to the desk, hidding behind Bob's Tofutti vegan cream cheese. I've found bliss! Hooray! I guess i'll drink this and THEN decide afterward about said party..

Anyways.. We spent a majority of this evening tweaking and mixing the epic "Quit" and took a few more photos in 35mm. and that about brings you up to date..

Everyone is upstairs waiting to here the final mix of 'Quit' and it seems later than it is, it's been a busy day. We are all looking forward to kicking it with AV Dan/Dan "Dean" Keehn tomorrow. Hopefully he'll arrive safe ready to get his 'gri-zz-lle' on. That's what Dan would say anyways.. drive safe Dan and we'll see you in a matter of hours. More tomorrow from the deck outside in the sunshine grill-side drinking some cold ones and BBQ'ing..

dan:

if you like muffins..you'll like this... and don't forget to pick up one of these before you head out and start your day...that is all...

dan:

You don't have to be on drugs to dig this....

Robert:

241 Ana Ng - They Might Be Giants

Mark just asked what today's song was. When i told him, he said, oh that's too bad. Today we take some photos for the album. Gotta negotiate some Crew to control the cowlick.

mark:

I'm all done whoopin' on Damon at the blackjack table(actually a desk in the office portion of Smart).I cleaned him outI think I got him for about $1.Woo-hoo!Tonight ,while everyone went to the store to get some frosty beverages,I sat in the control room and cranked the cd player. You don't often get to hear your favorite cd's at that kind of volume .Amon Tobin(supermodified) was about to make me soil my Levi's.It has sooo much low end-I love it.I also cranked U.N.K.L.E.,Godspeed,you black emperor!,and a bootleg Tenacious D cd .As you can imagine, the last one didn't meet my aural expectations. It is pretty fucking funny, though.
We are waiting(not so patiently) the arrival of Chris and Gregg so we can demolish some more Supreme Pizza.I'll be digging in on the pie that has no cheese, thank you .I'm starting to get woozy from lack of grindage.Step on it,dudes! If they don't get here soon,i'm going to have to go ahead and order it anyway.someone stop him before he eats again.Oh,the horra...the horra.

Robert:

Damon is showing me a new card game that he invented. If necessity is the mother of invention, then boredom is the mother of necessity, which doesn't really work out mathematically, so maybe it's a distant cousin or something stupid like that. Now they're playing blackjack. We are mixing one of my faves, "Haven't Been This Happy" and i can't help but dance in France. Anybody hear that Tenacious D song about Jesus Ranch? Who's going to burn that on a CD for me? Huh? If you do, Mark will be your best friend. I am drinking bass. And Damon has busted.

dan:

jeez..It looks like everybody had a couple last night..I still feel like crap..mustofbeen the Fosters..no warm shots for me thank god..I'm brewin' right now hopin' that It'll make me feel better, it usually does..tonight I'm gonna chill and tomorrow I'm gonna celebrate my independence with my hombres after work.. and then sunday I'm gonna be q'ing up the bbQ...remind me to bring my camera..I just looked outside and theres a couple of kids totally rocking this mini van..wow huh? I'll have more interesting things to say once I get home...is it 6 o'clizock yet..?

mark:

ooooohhhh-my head(and hands, and elbows, and knees, and pockets, and hair)hurt.Who was handing me WARM shots of whiskey last night? And why was I drinking them???I'm soooooooo stupid.Damn you Matt T for chasing me!Thank heavens I had my spikey belt on,or it could have gottn messy! This makes no sense at all,but I have to write something, don't I.We're on our way out to Mark's car to listen to a finished(Finnish?) version of "frowning of a lifetime" Good god, man!! ineed a shave before Chris and Gregg get here. We are also supposed to be doing some photos, and I'm a mess.Fuck me!!The Simpsons are on too!More later.Be good

Todd:

What a night last night! Don't let those Paris TX. guys fool ya, sure they can drink, but can they HOLD their liquor? Apparently not. Had a great time out with the boys and gals, Bob even made a little head way on secret OP906. Finished the night total college-town style by sleeping on a porch, ugh. Hows that for punk rock?

Mixing is moving along, unlike my progress on the book i'm reading. Gotta get on that. Not much else to say, word has it the Dismemberment Plan will be stopping by for a night of unbridled-chaos next week mid-tour, they have a day off. It'll be good to see them, it's been awhile. Our "art" guys will be here tonight around 10 o' clock to eat pizza and talk buisness about artwork, photos, and the like. They'll be staying through tomorrow. Drive safe boys! see you at 10!

Thanks to Dan R. for the yo-yo advice, it's appriciated. More later..

Robert:

This is the funniest thing i have seen all year. It's a website that will convert any page into a custom Mr.T.-rant. Go ahead put The wire URL - http://www.heymercedes.com/wire.html - in there. It is AMAZING! Thanks for the link, Nick!

Robert:

242 Love Plus One - Haircut 100

Yes, I love me some good Haircut 100. We are mixing "Frowning of a Lifetime" right now and in order to recreate a 50's style vocal delay, we are reverting back to the old days, and actually using a "tape slapback procedure," just as they would have done it. Personally, I haven't the foggiest idea how it all works, but it does, and it sounds real nice. There were many drinks to be had last night, and i gleefully chatted it up with friends Justin, Scott, Matt T, etc etc etc... and woke up feeling pretty swell, considering. I slept inside on a comfy futon at our pal, Erin's house. Riddle me this: How did my blanket end up on the porch?

dan:

I am blogging right now..! My goodness, last night was a party ....whew....first it started with the survivor party that included 3 pizzas (pepperoni, cheese, and fresh mushroom). and these of course mix that with some hot chicks and a great pal...and there you go..we didn't watch the show till like 11 cause some people can't get here till then so at around 12 or so mike says "dave and andy are gonna be at the VP later...." I said "cool" so we cruise out but not to the VP instead..theres this part I haven't told you..dave called from his celly and said.." we're at the garage instead dood see you in a bit " so we cruise over there and meet dave, andy, scott, and tim..drank and finally made it home at 2am..I know early huh..? Now I'm wishing I grabbed a coffee instead of a scotch on the rocks...I mean milk.

May 3, 2001
Robert:

Hi. I have given up on the Simpsons figure craze to focus more directly on OP906, in which Shirley already has a spot. Done and done. Next stop, Paris Texas and Dismemberment Plan. It's a darn shame that i couldn't make it the alkaline trio / blink 182 show. Wouldn't that be a catch? Gotta go drown. Later.

Todd:

Oh Madison, how thoust dissapoint.. i went to the store today solo to look for a few things, one being the new Rough Trade shops box/4 cd compilation. Why does noone have this? I tried to get it from Parasol, my faithful savior as far as online mailorder, but they where out. Secondly, I tried to pick up a copy of Queen II on cd for our engineer Mr. Mark Haines, again, checking at about 4 record stores, no luck. Why not stock back catalog? Was 1974 that long ago??

Another little dissapointment was I could'nt buy a yo-yo at the store today. We went to Toys 'R' Us(Just pretend the 'r' s backwards, ok?) to explore and hopefully purchase some items for Bob's new fetish, and I was stoked to buy a good old trusty Duncan yo-yo to pass the time here in the studio.. I used to be a pretty good yo. Nope! The person looked at me like I was nuts, said they had'nt carried them for awhile. Do you just discontinue an amazing toy? I guess it does'nt take double A batteries so it's useless in todays market. Boo hoo.

On a happier-less ranting note, the mighty Miss Katie will be in town tonight to cut a few heads of hair and go out for a drink with me and the boys. I believe tonight will be fun. Matt T will be in the house, Cactus Club Justin and all the Paris TX kids. Might get a lil' rowdy. Full details tomorrow for all you faithful readers right here, same bat-time, same bat-channel.

dan:

ok, here it is....remind me to request a bus with a kitchen..cause I'm starting to write down some of these recipies and If we're parked somewhere for awhile believe me you I'll be cookin' some wonderful dishes for the guys and girls or whom ever would like to indulge in my culinary skills, just follow the recipie right...? I think I might even make up a little menu with about 8 dishes to choose from...appetizers..? hell yeah jalapeno poppers..I'll tell you what though..there better be two sides to that grill cause you know me..I like mEat..! eat it up..

mark:

Last eve,as Bob mentioned,Nick(Paris,Texas)Andy, and Holy Sam Dude(aka sam -Paris,Texas)took Todd and me to the Echo Lounge.Man,what is up with college people? They sure like to drink and play the Dave Matthews Band alot.I mean ALOT! It's like they can't live without Dave.Freaky. There was a couple dancing in the middle of the joint to a pearl jam song.I guess I'm just out of my element.I should be catching up on my email, but this darn computer freezes up when I try to log in to my account. It could be that I'm basically a moron when it comes to these things(insert scene of me pounding on the side of the moniter-"dammit!!Son of a...!$@@!$#@!)I don't know.
Everyone wish J. a nice trip to Europe(lucky bastard).Make us proud ,baby!!!Time to hit the deck(upper deck??)and burn one. There's just something about overcast days that make me really want to drink coffee and smoke .I mean more than usual.I don't know what it is.

J.Brian-Hang in there brother. It sucks now,but it will get better.Play some Coalesce, and get in touch with your 800 pound gorilla.

Robert:

243 Take Me With U - Prince

I'm only happy when it rains... Last night was a quiet one. The boys went out to a bar for a quick night capper, while i put the covers over my head and fell right asleep... Tonight we have plans to go out bigtime, so i'm saving my energy for that endeavor. Tomorrow night, Gregg and Chris will be coming up to take some photos and work on album artwork concerns. Sunday afternoon, Dan Dan the Crazy Ace Grillin' Man will be crumbing up to flip a few better'n burgers on the deck. Tuesday night, we just found out that the Dismemberment Plan's gonna be in town, so that's another night of unbridled chaos... Woe woe is me... Today, we hope to finish up "A-List Actress" and "The Frowning of a Lifetime". Still gotta get my OP906 in gear.

dan:

how come I can never get up when it's raining outside...anyone? great now my washing machine is sounding like it needs to be exercised..drizzle drizzle tizzo bizzo ..coffee anyone...

May 2, 2001
mark:

I miss J already. What's a boy to do?Nothing,I suppose. We're getting a little nutty out here at Smart. We're almost done with the second song(every turn)soon to be followed by A-list actress.I think we'll be calling it a night after that.Methinks it's time to order some grub from Madisons finest pizza joint-Supreme Pizza. They have soysage!!!!Dig it.Time to run upstairs to listen to a mix .later

j.:

It's Marmite and Bounty bars all around when I get back.
xoxo - J.

Todd:

Good to see J back on the blog! Pick me up some Tartex if you remember..

And yes boys and girls, Bob is right.. There will be no single previous to the album. Sorry. More later on that. it also looks like the record may be out on July 31st now, just to make sure we can get everything done properly, as opposed to the previous street date of July 24th. All of those people attending the Vagrant America tour can buy it from us personally. We will have copy to sell pre-street date while on tour.

Has anyone seen the Wrigleys' chewing gum commercial with the New York Dolls song in it? I believe it's "Looking For a Kiss"? Have'nt seen it yet..

Dan!! Are you kidding!? hells yes we're going to BBQ on Sunday, don't think twice aboot it. Hopefully the weather will be more BBQ'esque. Kind of overcast today and it's possible it could rain. Cross your fingers and bring the ketchup!

Robert:

J. So good to hear from you. It is rather addicting, isn't it? A few things: Firstly, you best be checking in whilst overseas. As Steve Winwood wrote in a song that came in at a somewhat respectable #494 on this list, "While you see a chance, take it." Secondly, mixing is going well, but we're sort of taking things purposely at a snail's pace. (It may be a little more like Christmas than you had imagined! Just kidding.) We just printed song #1, which happened to be "Our Weekend Starts on Wednesday." It's good to be cautious and precise when mixing, but... um... well, maybe i'm just not over the rock em sock em fast paced life that we led for an all-too-short time at Pachyderm. Sure, those chocolates yesterday were OK, but seeing Shirley (or for that matter Mr. Haines!) mctwist off a diving board into an indoor pool - now that would be something. Ninthly, as I chatted with SM over some Bands on the Run, she did express love for your previous band that began with a J, J. If i had only bootlegged "Identikit" (darn that portable dashboard CD burner in the old rickety van!), I could have spun it to bring her up to date. S'alright, though. All in good time.

Say hi to all in DC for us, and good luck o'er there!

Also, we've got a lot of photos from the recording and even some incriminating video footage. You will see some of that round these parts come June 1, when I attempt to launch a new redesigned website. Fingers crossed. Oh yeah, and there will be no single coming out on June 12. (T's about to email you, G.) Bye!

j.:

Springtime in Washington DC. NOW I remember why I live here. Of course, living as I do in WWDC, I stand very little chance of sharing chocolates with Shirley Manson, but I suppose my life is rich enough.
Had to blog today - I'm afraid the Hey Mercs may have got me addicted.
This week will go by too quickly - Monday it's off to Europe for me & the Burning Airlines. Not eenough home time.
Hey Hey Mercedeses: thanks for a lovely couple of weeks. Even the hard work. Hearing the final mixes will be like Christmas.

dan:

bloggers..FALL IN..so far at work here I've had the pleasure of chatting with a lady who just had a doctor look at her toenail..right away I pictured this yellow smelly claw..so she mumbled for a bit and then another older person walks in probably around 65,70...comes in and then axes me to call him a cab..so I said sure..then he sits down and it's pretty quite in here..I found that ambient music works pretty good where I am and he sits down and lets one RiP like nothings going on here.against a plastic chair even....just sittin' waiting for the cab...I proceded to light my orange sherbet candle nonchalantly...and he's still here...no more farts but theres something lingering..' do you have to let it linger? '..wednesday..finally...I'm doin' real good except for not being able to sleep last night...after about half a bottle of valerian root I was knocked out..sweet! smelly again..have you ever smelt valerian root..smells like poody..speakin of poody
BBQ..burgers and chips..pickles..cheese..toasted buns anyone...I'm wondering if grilling out on the back deck of smart is an option...I'm pretty clean and I know how to grill..lemme tell ya..maybe bob or todd can kinda ease that question into mark for sunday afternoon...hey guys..? boca burgers.?.I won't burn these todd..
peace out-

Todd:

Day Two of mixing with the remarkable Mark Haines here @ Smart. Things are good in-house, got the coffee flowin', read some out of the numerous Nirvana books laying around the house.. We are now doing some fine tuning before moving on to song number two sometime this afternoon. Just found out my good friend John and his girlfriend Tonya had their baby yesterday, is'nt life a wonderful thing? Hopefully i'll see them when in the north-west next. Ordered some records the other day while briefly home, now I got to wait two weeks for my goodies, looking forward to hearing that new For Stars record and the new(old?) Big Bright Lights cd which is FINALLY out. I also got bored while at the studio last week up at Pachyderm and ended up winning some careless Ebay auctions.. Hmmm. What the hell am I going to do with that Justin Timberlake light switch cover 'cute' or that 'adorable' cows kissing salt n' pepper shaker set??

More later from Madison.

Robert:

244 Smallpox Champion - Fugazi

Stayed with the Paris Texas boys last night. I had quite a restful sleep until about 3 AM when a huge posse of 10+ people decided to jump all over us! We still are unsure of the culprits.

May 1, 2001
Robert:

Well, I'm pretty psyched. I just had a nice talk with Mrs. Manson, and she said she'd be a part of #OP906... but just not tonight. Woohoo! And i just got word today that i may even have a slight chance to involve the king of Smoove himself, Mr. Donald Fagan, providing I can safely transport 'the means' via some postal service. Rockin'. Things are going well here. We're still getting all the sounds just right. While we waited, Mark, Todd, and I cruised across the street to JTs Friendly Bar for some Leinies and a quick game of darts. Email me to find out who won. And there you have it. Tomorrow, our weekend starts.

Robert:

Hey gang. Tis the truth. I was here for less than an hour and Shirley Manson presented us with a nice platter of chocolates - overflow from a huge assortment that "they could never eat in a million years." I'm still wondering when I should ask her to be a part of obsessive project #906. For those who already took part, what do you think? I think I'll wait a week or so until she recognizes me as just another rocker with a goofy hobby. Ditto for Butch Vig... By the way, the amazing Mark Haines is doing a bang-up job on "Our Weekend Starts on Wednesday." In a perfect world, i would play it for all of you over the internet... We're going to be staying with the Paris Texas folks for a few days. Please don't let me drink too much brew.

Todd:

Did someone say dwarf invasion?

Hallou, vee ar Comman Denomanator.. Props to Reggie.

Sitting here waiting for Bob, apparently he missed his train out of Chicago so our trip to Madison will be a little delayed, hes coming in on the 12. Radiohead on the turntable, cat in lap, coffee on 'coffee warmer'. Good to go. Yup, I OWN a 'coffee warmer' and it sits neatly on my desk, next to the lamp. I bought it for 50 cents at some thrift store years ago, still works. It was one of those things they used to advertise for on TV in the 80's along with the Garden Weasel, Ginsu knives, and K-tel cassettes.

Hate cold coffee? Hate having to microwave or warm-up that mug? Now only 9.95!

Probably banned or recalled because it's a fire hazard, no problems yet to date. Once bought and treasured, then discarded.... only to be rebought by myself cheapily to be cherished forever...

Mmmm.

Now thats good coffee! Warm too!!

Robert:

245 Little Trip to Heaven - Tom Waits

Up at this hour. Like I'm going to work. Actually, I"m taking the train up to Milwaukee, then driving over to Madison to start a-mixing. Expect full scale blog invasion. This is the blog invasion!

Robert:

246 Changes - David Bowie

After watching an excellent presentation of True West, starring Gary Sinese and John Malkovich, I was almost certain that the voice of Frank Grimes, from one of the best Simpsons (coincidentally Chris' favorite episode - mine being the Space one) - was done by Gary. However, I was wrong. A shame. I thought i had made a grand discovery. This fine morning, I will be taking a brisk lovely walk to breakfast at Ann Sather. Pardon me.

Dan, you gotta come hang out in Madison for a day or two, buddy! We'll grill out with Shirley Manson.

dan:

good morning...I can't believe I made it to work while staying awake...I am sooootired...coffee good...getting to bed at 2am not good..Mark where the h, e double hockey sticks where you last night and afternoon for that matter..I had the grill all q'd up for some veggie burgers and I missed you bra...I'll see you in madison...talked to todd last ..well lemme start from the top...:

April 29, 2001
Todd:

Hello Limbo! We are currently all at home for another 42 hours or so, less for Bob who will be taking the train up early on Tuesday.. Then it's back off to work more on the record for two weeks. Mixing starts Tuesday morning.

Saw my cat, girlfriend, paid some bills, ate some delicious Comet veggie chili.. Still got to unload Grace and get a lil' laundry done. Other things to do while briefly in Milwaukee: Go to Cactus Club tonight to see North of America, eat out alot, down some cold ones with Dan, go to the bank, get stamps, listen to the rough mixes alot...

Thats all for now, count on full-on HM blogging starting on Tuesday when we all are again locked up together. Until then..

Robert:

247 The Tide is High - Blondie

It is a beautiful day in Chicago! What am i doing inside blogging? Actually, there's some dinner being cooked in the burbs that i may eventually have to eat... so i'll relax a little out here, then it's back on the train, gang.

By the way, J now has full access to the blog and we have encouraged him to share some stories while he's in europe for the next month! And by the way, go pick up the Burning Airlines "Identikit" album when it comes out on May 7th. Oh man, it's amazing!

mark:

Here I am,at home ,and I couldn't wait to get out of here any more.I thought I'd see some good people, but 99% of my friends are out of town-Camden and Promise Ring and Pele are on tour. What is a boy to do?
I came home last night after safely delivering the master tapes to Smart Studio(shouldn't we have had an armed gaurd or something?)
and was totally ready to OUT.I've been IN for two full weeks. All I wanted to do was go to a bar and have a few cold ones with some peeps, but I'm such a doofus,I couldn't rally anyone up.Oh well.I spent the day (so far)cleaning out my closet, vacuuming the house, and getting my film developed(my light meter must be broken-how could I have taken so many bad photos?)and
listening to some music that was not made by me.As I type(slowly) I've got Songs Of Zarathrusta in the cd player.Really good noisey punk band from Minneapolis who played with us at 7th st.Entry.Nice keyboards, and boy can that guy scream!Check it out if you are feeling angry.
I need to find something to do .Maybe I'll go to Earwax Records and buy some Swedish death metal.
